Troops fashioned a small timber paddle or "kip"to launch two pennies skyward, with players betting on them landing either Heads or Tails.

The game was contolled by the Boxer, an enterprising sort who would gather players around a ring in the dirt and encourage bets.

The Boxer selected a Spinner from the eager troops. The Spinner would enter the ring and take the Kip and the Pennies, placing one head side up and the other tail side up in the kip. Once the Spinners bet was covered onlookers made side bets. When Boxer called "no more bets, come in Spinner" the Spinner tossed the coins two yards overhead, careful to land them within the ring. If both Pennies landed head side up it was "Heads". If both Tails were showing it was "Tails"; and if it was one of each it was "Odds". The Spinner needed three consecutive Heads to win. If he threw Tails he lost his bet and handed back the Kip.

https://roundaboutantiques.com.au/products/australiana-memorabilia-the-western-front-commemorative-two-up-set-boxed
