Carrara Ware is a dense off-white stoneware containing more Cornish china clay than usual. It has a slightly translucent crystalline matt glaze, giving it an appearance and texture somewhat resembling Italian Carrara marble. It was decorated with coloured pigments - and often with Faience decoration, seen here.

Approx 17.5cm (7") tall
Approx 13.5cm (5 1/3") wide at widest

In excellent condition
GUARANTEED free from damage and repair

About Eliza Simmance [1873 - 1928]
Although over shadowed in the 19th Century by the famous Barlow sisters - Eliza later became more and more recognized as an original and versatile designer and decorator, especially in Doulton Wares and Silicon Wares. Her creative talents are seen here in the superb scrolling design on the handles and incision decoration on the neck of the vase.

Her body of work, amassed during more than half a century at Doulton, has great attraction to the modern collector - such is the variety and volume of examples one may find.

Eliza practiced most of the decorating techniques in vogue at the Lambeth Pottery and often combined two or three of these on the same item - incising through coloured slips, carving, perforating, applied relief figuring and bold modelling. Her finely incised and pate sur pate decoration is superb. Like her colleague Frank butler, she was very much alive to changing trends in the art world and some of her designs in the Art Nouveau manner are very attractive. She won many awards at International exhibitions.

About Kate Rogers [1880 - 1895]
Kate Rogers was a Faience, Impasto and Carrara Ware painter specialising in floral decoration with a strong, firm touch. A superb example of her skills are seen here. Before her marriage to fellow artist William Hyde, Miss Rogers exhibited her watercolour designs at London Galleries.

https://roundaboutantiques.com.au/products/doulton-lambeth-carrara-ware-twin-handle-vase-decorated-with-gilt-tube-lined-floral-decoration-2-eliza-simmance-and-kate-rogers
