Originally introduced in 1919 by silversmith Christoph Widmann, it features a detailed embossed rose motif inspired by a thousand-year-old rose bush growing on the walls of Hildesheim Cathedral in Germany.

According to tradition, King Louis the Pious ordered a chapel (later the Hildesheim Cathedral) built after sacred items left in a forest were found safely tangled in a blooming wild rose bush. Makers: While Christoph Widmann first popularized the pattern in 1919, its massive popularity led other German silversmiths and manufacturers (such as Wilkens & Söhne and WMF under names like Antik Rose) to produce their own variations through the 20th century.

https://roundaboutantiques.com.au/products/german-835-silver-hildeshiem-rose-sugar-shovel-decorated-bowl-13-7g
