However, the art form reached its peak in the 18th century as "Battersea" and Staffordshire cottage industries. Artisans transformed powdered glass into colorful, hand-painted luxury objects like snuff boxes, tea caddies, and scent bottles. After the Battersea factory closed, the artisans moved to the Midlands. Towns like Bilston, Wolverhampton, and Birmingham became bustling hubs of enamel production. These cottage industries expanded the product line to include patch boxes, nutmeg graters, candlesticks, and etuis.

In the 19th Century as machine-made goods and new trends took over, the production of hand-painted enameled boxes dwindled. However, the Victorian era saw a revival of interest in antique enamels and a resurgence in the use of enamels for high-end jewelry and decorative arts.

The tradition of decorative enameled boxes was revived in the 20th century by makers like Kingsley Enamels.

In August 1998 W.Moorcroft Plc acquired Kingsley Enamels Limited, a family company with an illustrious history in the specialised world of decorative metal work dating back to 1904. Moorcroft, a world leader in the field of art pottery had produced its famous ceramics for
more than a hundred years. From the 1st January 1999 Kingsley Enamels changed its name to Moorcroft Enamels, thereby enabling it to tap into the rich seams of colour, shape and design, all available from Moorcroft.

However in 2006 after what Moorcroft consider “irreconcilable differences in design style between pottery and enamels” a decision was made to close the business of Moorcroft Enamels. Production ceased on the 30th April 2006.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0070/9528/7908/files/moonlit_blue_1a_f90b3ce7-e3a7-4c7f-b006-9fa279a25500.jpg?v=1782697914
https://roundaboutantiques.com.au/products/moorcroft-enamels-moonlit-blue-hinged-lid-round-trinket-box-boxed
